Rat Rod Sundays at Tompkins Square Park and Beyond!
Saturday, March 14th 2009 is my brother’s birthday and was the grand opener of NYC’s finest city surfing. 30+ local boys showed up for a throwdown of all disciplines. The day began at noon when skaters gathered at 45 1st Ave infront of the infamous Sergio’s Barbershop. The day was beautiful and everyone was pumped for a kick ass day.
The crew spent an hour fine tuning our city-surf vessels before we departed to Tompkins Square Park for the 3rd NYC Rat Rod race. Two laps around the park’s winding path is New York’s most thrilling race. Fans gathered and the energy was high. The first race was Brian Davenport, Matt Kruszelnicki and winner Mike Dallas with a record 2min11sec. Immediately following was another record breaking run by Theseus Williams pacing at 2min04sec. Numerous heats of three followed but no wins beat the top time. The final race was Theseus Williams vs. Mike Dallas that ended with Mike in the lead but shy of the record with a 2min06sec.
After the Rat Rod Sprint race, the pack hit up the bodega then sprinted across the Avenues to Broadway. Once assembled the crew dropped into the gauntlet on Broadway and weaved traffic 3 miles to City Hall where we journeyed through the Police Headquarters to the Brooklyn Banks, a famous NYC skate spot, great skating and photography along the brilliant brick wave.
Next was a short distance push race from City Hall to Union Square at 14th street, filmed by Dre Outlaw. At 14th we turned and blasted down Broadway again, and again until our legs could not push any longer. It was fun.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, be sure to send us your pictures and footage! Remember, Rat Rod races will be hosted every Sunday at 7pm at Tompkins Square Park, Avenue A @ 7th st
